Beitbridge man fined for attempting to smuggle car

Beitbridge Bureau Chief
Beitbridge 7 March 2011
A Beitbridge man was yesterday slapped with R200 fine for allegedly conniving with a Malawian national and another Beitbridge resident to smuggle a newly imported Ford Ranger from Durban South Africa into the country using fake registration plates.

Willie Zimuto and Nicholas Nyambuya all of Dulibadzimu in the border town along with Rodrick Ngalande a Malawian were jointly charged for possessing articles for criminal use when they appeared before Beitbridge resident magistrate , Miss Gloria Takundwa yesterday.

They all pleaded not guilty, but only Nyambuya and Ngalande were cleared of the charges.

Charges are that; on the 6Th of January this year, Ngalande bought a Ford Ranger , registration plate WLAT528567, chassis number AFAEXXMJ2ESJOIO, 2005 , model, double cab in Durban , South Africa. He then left the car in Durban and went to Zimbabwe.

On the 20Th of February Ngalande then connived with Zimuto and Nyambuya and they fraudulently acquired Zimbabwean vehicle number plates, ABX 6328 and a registration book which they intended to put on the Ford ranger and smuggle it into the country.

It is the state case that on 27 February, some police detectives got a tip off on the accused persons’ intentions; they then pounced on them at the border post and recovered the fake number plates and registration plates from Zimuto. They subsequently arrested the trio.
