Beitbridge town council has employed Veteran engineer, Mr. Maxwell Karenyi as their substantive town engineer as the local authority moves towards transforming the border post into a fully fledged medium city.
The well travelled Karenyi was employed with the effect from the 1ST of January this year following the approval of the recommendations made by the local authority last year.
Until then, the town planner, Mr. Lekang Sijiye has been acting in that capacity.
Engineer Karenyi (28) is a graduate of the National University of Science and Technology and holds a Bachelors’ Honors Engineering Degree in Civil and Water engineering.
He has worked for Mundial works and Mulandel companies in Zambia for a year as a site engineer between 2008 and 2009.
He then left Zambia and joined Chirumanzu Rural District Council in Mvuma as a district engineer in 2009 before moving in that capacity to Zvimba Rural District council in July 2010 until his engagement by the Beitbridge town council this year.
In an interview yesterday, Eng Karenyi said he had a vision of transforming the border town transforming its face and moving towards municipality status.
He said they had a number of capital projects lined up that would ensure the town changed completely from its former self.
“As a local authority we share the same vision with the local residents of seeing the town‘s face transformed and also moving from town to municipality status. With that in mind we intend to be very much of a consultative council so that we foster development in one direction.
“Actually we intend to achieve this by engaging in high capital investment projects that is in infrastructure. We will be announcing some of our capital projects soon but very soon we are launch World Bank funded water and sewer rehabilitation system” he said.
The World Bank has availed $2, 3 million towards the upgrading the water and sewer reticulation in the border town which has become a perennial problem.
Beitbridge border post was award town status in April 2006 under the government’s national economic development priority development programme, which sought to transform it (border post) into a fully fledge medium city.
